Nitriding and Batch Ferritic Nitrocarburizing

Nitriding and ferritic nitrocarburizing are low temperature, thermal-chemical diffusion processes. Process temperature for nitriding typically range 510 to 565 C (950 to 1050 F) while ferritic nitrocarburizing is temperature range from 468 to 621 C (875 to 1150 F). Recent advancements in hydrogen analysis and computerization has made the measurement of nitrogen percentage and when ferritic nitrocarburizing the nitrogen and carbon percentages more precise, therefore, much easier to control. Nitriding results in a iron nitride, gamma prime layer while ferritic nitrocarburizing will result in an iron epsilon nitride layer. Gamma prime is usually minimized because it is considered brittle while iron epsilon is much greater because it is ductile.

American Steel Treating has four of the largest batch ferritic nitrocarburizing and nitriding furnaces in the world capable of processing up to 45 tons in a single cycle. These heat treating processes are low temperature case hardening processes, used to increase wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance. Meets AMS 2757B, 2759 / 12A, AMS 2759 / 10 and Caterpillar 1E0548.

Hydrogen / Nitriding / %DA Analyzer are used in hydrogen measurement and nitriding / FNC applications where precise measurement and control of % Hydrogen (%H2), %Dissociated Ammonia (%DA), and other related parameters.
EdgAlloy

High Quality EdgAlloy™

American Steel Treating is pleased to announce that it has developed and added the EdgeAlloy™ SE thermal system to the services we provide. EdgeAlloy™ is ‘Surface Engineering’ of ferrous metals and is a low temperature thermal-chemical diffusion process that provides wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance.

There are variations of EdgeAlloy™ SE:
  • Designed for very tight dimensionally tolerance parts.
  • Designed for typical applications.
  • Designed for the most rugged wear needs.
EdgeAlloy™ can be used with various topcoats or multi-layer coatings for tint, aesthetics, corrosion resistance, thermal fatigue and other value added, value engineered benefits.

American Steel Treating has four of the largest EdgeAlloy™ SE  vessels in the world capable of handling up to 45 tons in a single cycle.

EdgeAlloy™ SE can be used in these business sectors: automotive, off-highway, appliances, lawn and garden, oil and gas, mining, construction, tool and die.
